Karoline Edtstadler
Minister for the EU and the Constitution
In January 2020, Karoline Edtstadler was sworn in as Federal Minister for the EU and the Constitution by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen at the Federal Chancellery. Karoline Edtstadler was born on 28 March 1981 in Salzburg. From 1999 to 2004 she studied law at the Paris Lodron University in Salzburg. From 2008 to 2011 she worked as a judge at the Salzburg Regional Court and from 2011 to 2014 as a judge on assignment to the Federal Ministry of Justice. Subsequently, Karoline Edtstadler worked as an advisor in the cabinet of the Federal Minister of Justice, Wolfgang Brandstetter, until 2016. In 2016, she was seconded to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in Strasbourg as an expert (2016 to 2017). From 2017 to May 2019, she was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of the Interior during the Federal Government of Kurz I. Thereafter, Edtstadler was Member of the European Parliament and Head of Delegation of the Austrian People’s Party from July 2019 to January 2020. On 7 January 2020, Karoline Edtstadler was initially sworn in as Minister of the Chancellery without portfolio. Since 29 January 2020, she has been Federal Minister for the EU and the Constitution in the Federal Chancellery.
