Aija Kalnaja, Deputy Executive Director for Capabilities (DED-CAP), served as Executive Director a.i. from 1 July 2022 until 28 February 2023. Before becoming DED-CAP, Ms Kalnaja acted as Director of Capacity Building Division, responsible for pooling and managing capabilities from Member States and the agency to carry out operations at external borders. Prior to joining Frontex, she was Head of Operations Department and Head of Training Unit at CEPOL. Ms Kalnaja has also held positions with the State Police of Latvia, including Deputy Chief of Police and Head of Sirene Bureau.
